Nature, Sound Art and the Sacred - Reading Blog

I really enjoyed this authors outlook on the world. It reminds me of a concept of estrangement that I learned about in a literature class I took previously. This was the art of seeing something for the first time, as if you've never seen it before. There have many groups of writers and artists who have attempted to implement this way of thinking into not only their art, but their daily lives. I strive to do the same myself, to listen and experience things as if I have never experienced them before.

This author has worked on showcasing the relationship between nature and sound in his art. He speaks of his work being an interactive and collaborative process, and it is sort of inspiring how he looks at the work he does. These sounds almost have a linguistic feel to him, and it's super impressive.

I really appreciate that this artist bases most of his work are forcing his listeners to appreciate the natural world, and restore a more primitive connection with it. I agree that listening the world around you, especially if it is a natural landscape of sound, is a "venerable form of meditative practice". This person has a strong sense of community and that we all play a role in a larger scheme.

This person mentioned John Cage a few times and expressed just how big of an impact he had on the world of music. He was such a strange presence, but his mind changed the fundamental principles of sound and hearing forever. I think that's so cool and it was interesting to see someone go crazy for his works and what he did. He also criticized him a bit by setting limits on the word sound and its connotation, which I don't know if I necessarily agree with. During this part of the writing, the author just seemed to sort want to disagree for the sake of substance.

Cool reading :) !
