Webventure Artist Statement - Daily Life

My work this semester has taken specific into elaborating on the beauties that can be found in everyday life. This project continued with this theme, but again, with many twists and turns that distort reality in a satirical or comedic way.

This is showcased in this project, as the story begins during a normal day. You wake up, play some music based on your mood, and this takes you to a place where you decide your outfit which is also determined by the mood you selected previously. Again, the daily life theme continues as you venture to the breakfast choice that is made by which outfit you choose to wear.

After these choices, the normal reality begins to become a bit distorted as you turn into a cat, dream wildly, or venture into other parts of the internet. These all serve to disorient the participant from their perception of an average day.

I really enjoyed this project, because it gave us the most freedom to do anything our imaginations could think of. I loved the process of finding unique and funny ways to change reality. The music I used among the many pages of the webventure were a crucial and powerful part of this project. Playing a specific song or sound and then scrolling through a web page can create a totally different feel than if there is no sound. I delicately curated the song choices to illicit certain moods and emotions as different pages were reached.

I ran into the challenge of not being able to do an HTML work-around for how to allow music to automatically play when a participant enters the page. This takes away from the experience a bit because the participant has to click the play button themselves rather than being immediately immersed into the goal of the web page. Overall, probably one of my favorite works of the semester and one that I put the most energy and effort into. I am excited to continue my digital art career and am grateful for all the knowledge I’ve gained in this course.
