4:33 Composition - Artist Statement

This piece was meant to tell a story that took a dark turn. I initally made it a close to ten minute piece to build up tension and suspense, but I made a shortened version to fit the requirements of this project.

The story was supposed to be about me and the thoughts that come into play when under the influence. Whether it be loneliness, fear, or being overwhelmed by certain scenarios, these were all showcased in the work.

I attempted to capture a variety of atmospheres in my pieces, such as crowds, car driving, outdoors, rainstorm, and a spooky mansion.

This piece really focused on a story that was told through sound, being imagined by the person observing the work. The person finds themselves at two parties in the evening, smoking and drinking at both. Once the person walks out of the second party it begins to rain and they must seek refuge immediately, denoted by the increase in speed of walking.

After this person enters the scary home, they start to hear all sorts of sound and the storm in the distance. This is clearly a haunted house due to the strange choirs singing and children running around. This is also following a theme of October and halloween, a spooky time. The house is dangerously quiet which brings to life all the small creaks and sounds that appear before the main character.

The haunted nature is one I have really enjoyed working with and always admired. I hope to continue to work with these dark motifs, as I have always enjoyed being scared by films and art myself.
